Week 3 DQ 2 – Response to classmate Nick Miranda, statistics homework help

While conducting research, scientists predictably, assume normal distribution properties of the data set used in the studies. The properties of a normal distribution data set include symmetrical data about the mean, distribution defined by mean and standard deviation, total probability of one of the area covered under distribution (Toulias & Kitsos, 2014). In quantitative research, the assumptions of the normal distribution is very important. Quantitative researches involve gathering and analyzation of the numerical data to explore findings (Toulias & Kitsos, 2014). Several statistical tools are used to analyze the numerical data in the quantitative research. These statistical tools require specifying the underlying distribution of the data set (Ellis, 2009).Thus, quantitative researchers requires solid understanding regarding the normal distribution property of the data set. A valid assumption regarding data set should be made by the researchers to ensure the validity and reliability of the research’ results (Ellis, 2009).

Actually, data properties can be diverse because of the influences of a number of known and unknown variables of the research; the outcomes of the study will vary given various properties of the data set covered under the study. Given diverse properties of the data set, to simplify the research outcome the researchers assume normal distribution properties of the data set (Kortemeyer, 2016). In these cases, the assumption of the normal distribution is reasonable to make. Normal distribution assumptions are made to make the mathematical models simplest used in the experiments (Kortemeyer, 2016). Relaxation of normal distribution will lead to the requirement of complex analysis and experimentation. Understanding of the normal distribution helps researchers to know the limitations of their experiments, and to understand where their studies’ results break. Results will not be reliable where non-normal distribution is reasonable but normal distribution assumption is made (Joo, Aguinis, & Bradley, 2017). The researchers should test the normal distribution property of the data set before making assumption regarding it.
