sets and functions, math homework help

For this week’s discussion you are to identify two sets from your daily life and explain the relation between them. Identify which set is the domain and which set is the range of your relation. Is your relation a function, and if so, why? If your relation is not a function, how can it be changed to be a function (if possible)? If your relation is a function, what are the benefits?

Example: My two sets are:

  • A={batteries, bills, checks, pencils, keys, envelopes, post stamps}
  • B={Top drawer, Middle drawer, Bottom drawer}

A is the domain and B is the range. I want to arrange the items from set A into different drawers from set B. This is the relation that I want:

R={(Batteries, Top), (Pencils, Top), (Bills, Middle), (Keys, Middle), (Envelopes, Bottom), (Post Stamps, Bottom), (Checks, Bottom)}

Relation R is a function since for every element in set A there is a unique element from set B.

In plain English, if I start putting batteries in drawers other than the top one, my organizing strategy won’t be a function anymore and it will be more challenging to locate items that I’m looking for.
