NURS 3605 Fundamentals of Nursing
Course Description
This course introduces nursing concepts and skills essential to provide the foundation for safe and effective nursing practice. Clinical hours are focused on basic therapeutic nursing skills with an emphasis on core competencies: critical thinking skills, communication, assessment, and technical skills.
Prerequisites
Admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program and NURS 3303.
Corequisites
Successful completion of, or concurrent enrollment in NURS 3307 & NURS 3308.
Course Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Professionalism: Describe and demonstrate professionalism and the role of the nurse. Discuss ethical and legal principles related to nursing practice.

2. Patient-Centered Care: Recognize and treat patients and their families as unique individuals with preferences, values, and need Create a plan of care based on an assessment of the patient’s unique needs.

3. EBP: Discuss and demonstrate evidence-based practice as a basis for nursing care.

4. Informatics & Technology: Explain the nurse’s role in managing informatics and technology. Use technology to plan and document quality patient care.

5. Quality Improvement: Identify quality improvement needs and describe how to improve quality and safety of the healthcare system

6. Teamwork and Collaboration: Demonstrate collaborative working skills with other healthcare providers and patien Recognize the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and communication in shared decision-making.

7. Wellness and Prevention: Define and demonstrate wellness and prevention initiatives to promote healthy outcomes in a variety of communities and population

8. Leadership: Identify the roles of leadership and advocacy in professional practice. Demonstrate beginning leadership qualities and advocacy for patients, families, and the profession.

Grading Policy and Criteria
Specific guidelines and grading criteria for all assignments are in the Modules. Final grades for the course will be determined based upon the following point assignments:
A – 90-100
B – 80-89
C – 75-79
D – 60-74
F – Below 60
Final course grades less than 75 are not rounded up.
The simple average of all exam grades including a final must first be at or above 75% in order to pass the course. Once the student has achieved a simple exam average of 75% or higher, course grades will be determined based on the weighted calculation of exams and other required course work.
Late policy: 5% will be deducted each day up to 3 days, an assignment is past due unless prior arrangements have been made with your course faculty. Extenuating circumstances may apply. Beyond 3 days late, the entered grade will remain a zero.

ATI Testing Policy
ATI Fundamentals Practice A and Practice B. These two practice tests will be completed within a 1-week window on the date specified on the calendar. Remediation must be completed within this time frame.
ATI Fundamentals Proctored Test. This test will be administered in a proctored exam environment (computer lab). You will receive a Raw Score from this test. Your ATI raw score is weighted based on the rubric below. Below Level 1 and Level 1 are required to retake the exam.
ATI Focused Review.  After completion of the practice A and B tests, as well as the Proctored Test, ATI will suggest a Focused Review for remediation. A focused Review is required for obtaining the percentage points listed. Each student is required to create a 25-question remediation quiz with a score of 80 or better. Additionally, if the score received on the exam is below 75%, a review quiz will be assigned automatically. If the focused review hours, active learning templates, and the remediation quiz are not completed by the due date, the grade entered for the practice or proctored exam affected will be a zero.

Attendance and Make-up Policy
Attendance/participation is expected. Make-up for exams, quizzes, assignments, clinical time missed is at the discretion of the instructor.
